A Week In Darts - January 20, 2025 - Bunting Secures First World Series Title At The Bahrain Darts Masters

The 2025 World Series of Darts got under way in Bahrain last week and saw Stephen Bunting make the perfect start to the new season. Here’s our round-up of all the action in the Middle East…

BUNTING BAGS BAHRAIN TITLE

Stephen Bunting won his maiden World Series of Darts title with a victory at the Bahrain Darts Masters on Friday.

The reigning Masters champion, who was competing in Bahrain for the first time, defeated Nitin Kumar, Chris Dobey, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price to claim glory on his first visit to the Middle East.

‘The Bullet’ set a new tournament record average in his quarter-final success over Dobey, averaging 111.33 to sweep aside ‘Hollywood’ in the battle of the beaten World Championship semi-finalists from earlier this month.

That record would not last long as less than half an hour later Price posted a staggering 115.31 average, defeating the newly crowned world champion Luke Littler 6-2 to end the teenager’s reign as Bahrain champion.

In the semi-finals, Bunting battled back from 6-4 down to knock out the world number one Humphries in a last-leg decider, before completing a convincing 8-4 win over Price in the final to lift his first title on the World Series circuit.

“I am playing the best I have ever played,” Bunting said. “I’m more consistent than ever before and now I’m believing I can win titles.

“The hypnotherapy behind the scenes, the psychology in the past, it’s taken a lot of hard work.

“From feeling down in the dumps to becoming the world number five is an incredible feeling, and hopefully the only way is up!”

The World Series resumes with the Dutch Darts Masters, which starts on Friday (January 24) in Den Bosch.

GREAVES DOUBLES UP ON CHALLENGE TOUR

Beau Greaves marked her return to the PDC Challenge Tour after a five-year absence by winning two titles to soar to the top of the Order of Merit.

The reigning three-time WDF women’s world champion was amongst a bumper field of close to 300 players in Milton Keynes for the opening weekend of the new Challenge Tour season.

And the 21-year-old stole the headlines with a brace of tournament victories, picking up the Event One and Event Three titles at Arena MK.

On Friday, Greaves posted a tournament average of 92.73 as she won nine straight matches to claim the opening tournament of the year, beating Switzerland’s Stefan Bellmont 5-4 in the final.

The Event Two crown went to a first-time PDC title winner in Oldham-born Carl Sneyd. The 37-year-old saw off Tommy Lishman 5-1 in the final to scoop the £2,500 prize.

On Saturday, Greaves doubled her trophy haul for the weekend by taking the top honours in Event Three. A 101.55 average helped her to sweep aside John Henderson 5-0 in the decider.

Lithuania’s Darius Labanauskas came out on top in the day’s second tournament, reeling off three straight legs from 3-2 behind to beat Mervyn King 5-3 in the final of Event Four.

On Sunday, Event One runner-up Bellmont went one step better as he thrashed Danny Jansen 5-1 to win Event Five and claim his first Challenge Tour title of the year.

The Challenge Tour season continues with Events 6-10 at the Halle 39, in Hildesheim, from March 14-16.

HEDMAN AND CAMERON SEAL LAKESIDE RETURNS

Deta Hedman and David Cameron have secured automatic spots in the 2025 WDF Lakeside World Championships after tasting victory at the Las Vegas Open at the weekend.

For the 65-year-old Hedman it is set to be a 15th appearance in a Women’s World Championship, after she edged past Rhian O’Sullivan 5-4 in a dramatic Las Vegas Open final.

The WDF-gold ranked event offered automatic qualification to Lakeside for the winner, with Hedman surviving six match darts to defeat O’Sullivan in a last-leg decider.

Canada’s Cameron also qualified for Lakeside after lifting the men’s title in Las Vegas, beating Jeff Springer Jnr 6-3 in the final.

A match-winning 94 checkout sealed a first WDF ranking title in five years for ‘Excalibur’, who joins Marko Kantele and Shane McGuirk on the list of confirmed qualifiers for Lakeside at the end of the year.
