A Week In Darts – Clean Sweep For Greaves And A Title For Lim

Welcome to Darts Corner’s weekly round-up of what went down in the world of darts during the last seven days. It was a week which once again proved that age is just a number in darts as a 19-year-old won four titles on the PDC Women’s Series and a 69-year-old got back in the winners’ circle on the PDC Asian Tour. Here’s our look back at a week in darts.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR GREAVES ON THE WOMEN’S SERIES

Fresh from lifting the Women’s World Matchplay on her debut in Blackpool the previous weekend, Beau Greaves kept up her winning streak as she completed a clean sweep of Events 13-16 on the PDC Women’s Series.

The 19-year-old won all four events played in Milton Keynes at the weekend, taking her winning streak to 39 matches on the Women’s Series. The teenager already boasts the longest unbeaten run of 70 games and is now more than halfway there to matching that astonishing run following her latest haul of titles.

On Saturday, Greaves picked up where she left off at the Winter Gardens, beating Lisa Ashton 5-2 in the Event 13 final, before completing the double with a 5-1 victory over Fallon Sherrock in the decider of Event 14.

Greaves averaged 104.96 in that final win over Sherrock – the second highest recorded average in a Women’s Series final – and returned the following day to pick up two more titles, beating Japan’s Mikuru Suzuki 5-0 and 5-4 in the Event 15 and Event 16 finals.

While Greaves, who has already qualified for the Grand Slam of Darts and PDC World Championship via her win in Blackpool, sits top of the Women’s Series Order of Merit by a huge margin, the race for the other Grand Slam spot and two places at Alexandra Palace are still up for grabs.

A pair of finals for Suzuki has helped strengthen her lead on second place, with a £2,600 advantage over third-placed Sherrock, who is on course to claim the last World Championship spot as things stand. Rhian O’Sullivan, in fourth, is the closest challenger and is £2,100 behind.

EVERGREEN LIM WINS ON THE ASIAN TOUR

The PDC Asian Tour has returned in 2023 following an absence of four years due to the pandemic, and there was a familiar name among the list of title winners in the latest weekend of action in Thailand over the weekend.

The legendary Paul Lim, who turns 70 in January, won the last of three events held at the Tide Resort, in Bang Saen, beating Paolo Nebrida 5-1 in the final of Event 21 on Sunday.

Nebrida, of the Philippines, reached all three finals at the weekend, losing out 5-2 to Japan’s Mitsuhiko Tatsunami in the Event 19 decider, before tasting a 5-3 defeat to Hong Kong’s Man Lok Leung in the final of Event 20.

The Asian Tour season concludes with the last three events in China from September 9-10, and the top four players on the final Order of Merit will qualify for the PDC World Championship. Leung (second) and Nebrida (third) occupy two of those spots, along with Lourence Ilagan (first) and Jun Matsuda (fourth), while Lim is hot on their heels in fifth place.

AROUND THE BOARD

Old rivalries will resume when multi-time world champions Phil Taylor and John Part lock horns in the first round of the World Seniors Matchplay in September.

The draw for the opening round of the 16-player event, which takes place at the York Barbican from September 2-3, was made on Sunday.

Taylor and Part, who faced off in two PDC World Championship finals in the early 2000s, meet in the first round, while last year’s World Seniors Matchplay champion Robert Thornton opens his title defense against reigning WDF men’s world champion Neil Duff.

Elsewhere, the England Lionesses have caught the darts bug in their training base for the Women’s World Cup.

It was revealed last week that inside the England women’s football team’s camp is a dartboard, along with a table tennis table and arcade games, to help pass the time between matches.

The Lionesses, who famously won the European Championship last summer, have made a good start to their bid for a first World Cup crown, recording 1-0 wins over Haiti and Denmark in their opening two Group D games.
