A Week In Darts – March 25, 2024 – Sherrock Wins Two Titles As Women’s Series Returns

The world’s top ladies players returned to action as the 2024 PDC Women’s Series got under way in Wigan at the weekend. Fallon Sherrock was the star performer, winning two of the four tournaments to make an early march towards Alexandra Palace at the end of the year. Here’s our look back at all things darts over the last seven days…

SHERROCK WINS TWO TITLES ON THE WOMEN’S SERIES

Fallon Sherrock is the early front runner on this year’s PDC Women’s Series Order of Merit after winning two titles on the opening weekend of the new season.

‘The Queen of the Palace’ had ended 2023 by winning four of the last five Women’s Series tournaments, and picked up where she left off with a pair of victories in Wigan at the weekend.

In Saturday’s first event, Sherrock survived two match darts to beat Beau Greaves 5-4 in the final, before doubling her tally with a 5-1 victory against Greaves in the Event 4 decider on Sunday.

Sherrock also reached the semi-finals in Events 2 and 3 to pocket £5,000 for the weekend, which sees her top the Women’s Series Order of Merit. The top two players at the end of the season will qualify for the PDC World Darts Championship.

Her victory over Greaves in Sunday’s finale saw Sherrock move to the provisional number one seed for the Women’s World Matchplay this summer, edging £100 ahead of Greaves with eight events left before the cut off.

Recent Challenge Tour title winner Noa-Lynn van Leuven climbed into the spots for Blackpool at the weekend, as she won Event 2 to become the 11th different winner on the Women’s Series.

Van Leuven beat Greaves 5-3 in the quarter-finals and then averaged 100 as she got the better of Sherrock by the same scoreline, before getting past Ireland’s Katie Sheldon 5-2 in the final.

Mikuru Suzuki added to her haul of titles with a victory in Event 3 as she survived match darts to beat Deta Hedman 5-4 in the final.

The Women’s Series continues with Events 5-8 in Wigan on April 20-21. Check out our Ladies Darts collection for signature darts and accessories for many of the top female players.

PREMIER LEAGUE HAT-TRICK FOR HUMPHRIES

Luke Humphries continued his recent dominance in the Premier League with a third nightly win in a row in Dublin last Thursday.

The world number one arrived in the Irish capital in red-hot form after night wins in Brighton and Nottingham, and he extended his winning run with a trio of victories at the 3Arena.

‘Cool Hand’ posted three 100+ averages across his three games as he defeated Peter Wright (6-1), Nathan Aspinall (6-4) and Michael Smith (6-2) to scoop the £10,000 bonus prize.

“I’m really enjoying myself,” the reigning PDC world champion said. “At the start of the season it felt really tough for me, but now I’m enjoying the game, and that’s when I’m at my best.

“I feel much more comfortable now. I feel like I belong here, and the last three weeks have just been fantastic.

“I know I’m not unbeatable, but I feel like I’m playing at a level where it’s going to take a big performance to beat me.”

After eight weeks of action the Premier League has reached the halfway point of the league phase, with Humphries leading the way on 22 points. Michael van Gerwen (15 points), Aspinall (13) and Smith (13) occupy the other three play-off spots, ahead of Luke Littler (13), Rob Cross (11), Gerwyn Price (7) and Wright (2).

HOWSON WINS FIRST SENIORS TV TITLE

Richie Howson is the newest TV title winner after lifting the World Seniors Champion of Champions in Blackpool on Sunday.

It was fourth time lucky for ‘The Owl’, who had lost in the final of three seniors televised events in 2023, losing out in the deciders of the World Championship, World Masters and Champion of Champions.

But Howson ended his search for a maiden title in front of the cameras as he beat Leonard Gates (10-2), Martin Adams (13-11) and Andy Hamilton (13-10) to secure the biggest win of his career.

“I’m just so grateful that I’ve finally won one,” he said. “It means everything.

“All that I’ve been doing for the last three years on the seniors tour has been working up towards winning one of these.

“I’ve put in a lot of hard work and it’s finally paid off. I’m just absolutely over the moon.”
