MICHAEL SMITH: FROM RISING STAR TO WORLD CHAMPION

Michael Smith has been competing on the PDC circuit since 2008. The St Helens ace outlined his potential as a future star when he won the 2013 PDC World Youth Championship, before suffering heartache losing in his first eight major finals. His darts nickname ‘Bully Boy’ comes from his previous work on a cattle farm in Littleborough. Smith would help out by tagging the new-born calves and the nickname ‘Bully Boy’ came from the farm owner.

Smith clinched his maiden major title in the PDC after winning the Grand Slam of Darts in November 2022, and two months later threw the perfect nine dart leg to overcome Michael van Gerwen in the final of the PDC World Championship. His landmark success at Alexandra Palace helped propel Smith to the top of the world rankings. In July 2023, Smith signed with the darts manufacturer Shot following a long and successful partnership with Unicorn. These Michael Smith 24g darts are made of 90% tungsten with a center weighted barrel, which is his personal preference. ·   After losing in his first eight major darts finals, Michael Smith achieved his darting destiny by winning the 2022 Grand Slam of Darts. The St Helens star ended his long wait for a maiden big title in the PDC by beating Nathan Aspinall in the final.

·   Just two months after becoming a major champion for the first time, Michael Smith doubled his tally with a victory against Michael van Gerwen to win the 2023 PDC World Championship final.

·   The Michael Smith 9 dart leg during the 2023 PDC World Championship final is widely regarded as “The Greatest Leg Of Darts Ever.” In the third leg of the second set, Michael van Gerwen threw a 180 and a 177 to leave 144, whilst Smith produced two scores of 180 to leave 141. ‘MVG’ then missed double 12 to complete the nine-dart leg and Smith stepped up to check out 141 and finish the leg in the perfect nine darts.
